“... But this also was a night for trying different events, all part of the training routine for most of the top swimmers. For instance, Olympic backstroke champion Aaron Peirsol turned up in the 200 individual medley.
Peirsol had a big lead midway through the race after swimming his trademark stroke, but his breaststroke was more than five seconds slower than eventual winner Eric Shanteau’s.
“That wasn’t fair,” Peirsol quipped after climbing from the pool. ...”
