Rogan Breaks World Record in Short Course 200 Backstroke; Cseh Takes Down Global

Rogan, Cseh break world records

Rogan clocked 1:50.43 in the 200m backstroke to better Aaron Peirsol’s previous
mark…

Austria’s Markus Rogan and Laszlo Cseh of Hungary
both broke world records on day one of the European shortcourse championships on
Thursday. Rogan clocked 1:50.43 in the 200m freestyle to better Aaron Peirsol’s
previous mark, while Cseh swam 1:53.46 to claim gold in the 200m individual
medley.

Rogan had decided not to defend his 200m individual
medley title in order to attempt to break Peirsol’s record of 1:50.52, and the
move paid off, the Austrian finishing first ahead of Arkady Vyatchanin of Russia
and Croatia’s Gordan Kozulj.

In Rogan’s absence, Cseh eased to gold ahead of
Vytaus Janausaitis of Lithuania and Italian Alessio Boggiato, breaking George
Bovell’s previous mark of 1:53.93.

PRILUKOV SETS EUROPEAN RECORD

Russia’s Yury Prilukov lived up to his favourite
status by setting a new European record of 3:37.81 to win the men’s 400m
freestyle.

Pawel Korzeniowski of Poland came second, with
German Paul Biedermann in third and Italy’s Massimiliano Rosolino - former World
and Olympic champion - in fourth.

Elsewhere, Germany raced to the top of the medals
table with gold in the men’s 4 x 50m medley and women’s 50 m breaststroke (Janne
Schaefer).
