And in Omaha it showed.,” world champion breaststroker Brendan Hansen of Peirsol, his teammate at Longhorn Aquatics. “He is the best in the world. He is Mr. Backstroke and if you start thinking that he’s not or somebody tells him that he’s not then he’ll prove it over and over and over again that he is.”
With six individual World titles and nine world records among the highlights on his resume, a sweep of the backstrokes in Beijing plus the likelihood of another gold on the 4x100 medley relay would once and for all establish Peirsol in the minds of most as the premier backstroker in history.

Lochte’s world record-setting upset left Peirsol like the rest of the swimming world in shock.
“The 200, that’s his baby,” said Ian Crocker, the former world 100 butterfly record-holder and another Longhorn teammate. “There were some rough days when we got back to Austin.”

Peirsol is uncertain of his future after Beijing, although his friends expect him to retire. He admits to wanting to spend more time with girlfriend Amanda Larence, a former Texas swimmer, and working as a “clean water ambassador” for the environmental group Oceana. ....
